My all time favorite artist...Robert Williams. His work just pulls me in like nothing else. Sometimes shocking and bizarre but always highly imaginative and entertaining. A real pioneer in this medium.
His work goes back to the mid 1960s when he worked for underground "stoner/counter-culture comic books and his hot-rod style blossomed into territory much more disturbing. He began churning out the most amazing oil paintings featuring a perfect balance between comic book illustration and super technical realistic background. He was at the helm of bringing this "lowbrow' art into acceptance on a much bigger scale. Ultra violent, sexual, psychedelic, hilarious, impossible, and grotesque.
Robert Williams has a whole series of books, but I really recommend two in particular. The first being "Through Prehensile Eyes". It features a shitload of his most recent paintings with a beautiful intro and some rare photos of him at work.
The other book is "Malicious Resplendence" and it includes a lot of his very early illustration work as well as tons of full page, full color paintings from the '80s and '90s. I bought 'The Lowbrow Art of..." before this came out only to find most of the work compiled in here.
Between these two books you would be well covered. Both are thick books with large reproductions on each page.
A master of the craft and still painting today, you can never go wrong with Robert Williams.
